The Girl Carmen
September 30, 2008
This post was inspired by a post on his Islay blog by Armin Grewe. As it so happens about ten days before he posted this I happened to be in Portnahaven photographing the self same trawler, or should that be ex-trawler? I took the opportunity of getting up close and personal with the said Girl Carmen (although I didn’t know her name at the time – thanks Armin), and the following series of photos are the result of that brief but rewarding relationship…
Update 04-10-08:
For a little more info on the subject of these photos see here.

Wow, this is why I like the internet, all this sharing of information, ideas and pictures.
While I went to Portnahaven in July I didn’t go down there, only picked up some honey up in Crown Street (excellent honey they sell there!), so I wasn’t sure how she looks now.
Only read what the one commenter in the forum had written about her falling after the blocks had collapsed. Now I can see it with your wonderful pictures. Like the 9th and the last pictures, all the different tones of brown and red!
Armin: I agree this is a wonderful medium for the “sharing of information, ideas and pictures”, and I would not be without it.
I will have to look into the honey thing next time we are over, probably for Christmas this year. I love honey and didn’t realise one could get it over there.
It is sad to see this trawler in such a sad state, but, on the other hand, if the Girl Carmen was in good condition she would not have provided such good photographs; personally my favourite is the very last one, thats is for two reasons, I love the tonal values and the colours, but I also like the idea of looking through the hole from the outside to the inside.
